Broken tools (2011).
This series documents a set of tools for drawing which I purposely built and modified to making the act of drawing difficult for the user. I developed these tools to challenge my drawing practice and to push the boundaries of what I could train myself to use, with the goal of eventually making marks I found satisfying. The work deliberately plays on the idea of usability, which is typically the goal of my day job, and sought to create a desirable experience through a frustrating action.
These particular tools were created for use, and thus, rather than photograph them directly, I allowed them to become drawings by documenting them as photograms.
